Know the enemy - TermitesIn our environment, it's really not a question of IF your home will be attacked by termites, it's WHEN. With several colonies per acre of land, each with tens of thousands of active termites, it's more important than ever to protect your home against the damages which can be caused by termites and other wood destroying insects. Termites eat wood. In their natural state, they eat fallen logs and stumps off the forest floor. But on your property, they can eat away the equity you have built up in your home and property. Termites infest millions of homes nationwide, causing over $750 million in damage annually, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. Real home security starts with research: Learn what termites do, learn how they invade a house or other structures - and act accordingly to protect against damage. After inspection, it is important to design a treatment plan using tools such as moisture control, wood source elimination, termiticides, termiticide foams, and baits. Subterranean Termites have inhabited the earth for more than 250 million years and are tough, determined and highly efficient. They live in the soil; from just below the surface to many feet below ground. A Subterranean Termite "queen" can live for decades and can produce thousands of eggs each year. Many of those offspring ("workers" and "swarmers") will develop into kings and queens and break off to form new colonies. This means the reproductive potential of a colony is literally unlimited! Early Warning Signs: Mud tubes connecting soil to wood. Hollowed wood beneath a finished surface. Discoloration behind paint or wallpaper. Swarming termites, live workers or discarded wings.
